Florida has no state income tax. For high earners from high-tax states, residency done right is worth six figures. Done casually, it is an audit waiting to happen.

Florida imposes no personal income tax. For an athlete or entertainer earning several million a year while domiciled in California (13.3% top rate) or New York (10.9%), the difference between residency there and residency here is measured in hundreds of thousands of dollars, season after season. This is why so much of professional sports quietly lives in Florida, Texas, and Nevada.
Your former state does not lose a high earner gracefully. Residency audits from California and New York are routine, and they examine where your life actually happens: where your home is, where your family lives, where your car is registered, where you vote, bank, worship, and see the dentist. The legal standard is domicile, your one true home, and it is proven with a paper trail, not a declaration.
Buy or lease a genuine Florida home, not a mail drop. File the Florida Declaration of Domicile. Get the Florida driver license and register the cars. Register to vote and actually vote. Move the banking, the doctors, the memberships. Track days meticulously; most challenging states apply a 183-day presumption, and your calendar, flight records, and phone location history will be the evidence. Update the estate plan to a Florida will. Do it all in the same season, because half-moves read as tax dodges.
Residency does not erase the jock tax. Games and performances in other states are still taxed there through duty-day allocation. What Florida residency eliminates is your home state taxing everything else: signing bonuses structured correctly, endorsement income, investment income, and the share of salary allocated to home duty days. That is usually the majority of the money.
We plan and document residency transitions, calculate duty-day allocations, file every state return the schedule creates, and defend the position if a former state comes asking. Run the Jock-Tax Estimator to see the scale in your own numbers, then have one confidential conversation.
